Introduction to Kaya Seka -
Kaya Seka is a type of liquid fomentation in which we pour warmed liquids like medicated decoction, medicated oil. Kaya Seka with oil is an unctuous type of fomentation, in which we pour warmed oil all over the body or a specific part of the body for a stipulated period of about 45 minutes to 1 hour, in a specific manner, for 7, 14 or 21 days. It has the advantage of producing strength and unctuousness along with fomentation simultaneously. If we use oil in this procedure, then specifically we call it Pizhichil in Kerala Ayurveda. Kaya Seka with medicated decoction is a variety of liquid fomentation, in which we use warmed medicated decoction to pour all over the body or a part of the body. We carry out the Kaya Seka process in different positions.
Benefits of Kaya Seka -
Kaya Seka type of liquid fomentation which removes stiffness, heaviness and coldness of the body. It makes the body perspire and thereby removes disease causing toxic elements from the body. Those patients suffering from Vata and Kapha Doshas can undergo this treatment. It is a prior procedure before undergoing body purification or detoxification treatments like Panchakarma.
Indications and uses of Kaya Seka -
Kaya Seka type of fomentation is indicated and used in conditions like coryza, cough, hiccups, dyspnea, heaviness in body, pain in ear, cervical region and head, hoarseness in voice, heaviness in throat, facial paralysis, hemiplegia, quadriplegia, paralysis, stiffness, abdominal immobility, constipation, urine retention, stiffness in lateral-dorsal-lumbar-abdominal region, sciatica, inguinal hernia, body ache, pain in lower extremities, inflammation, muscle cramps, metabolic disorders, disease due to cold exposure, shivering and tremors, pain in heel region, shrinking of body parts, stiffness in body, pain in all body parts, heaviness and numbness in part of body or whole body and autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis. Kaya Seka with medicated Kashaya is indicated in Vata Vyadhi with Kapha and Pitta Dosha associated. Kaya Seka with medicated oil is indicated in Vata Vyadhi of purely Vata origin.
