Crohn’s Disease
Crohn's Disease
Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that primarily affects the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, leading to inflammation, ulceration, and scarring of the intestinal walls. It commonly involves the small intestine, particularly the terminal ileum, but can affect any part of the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus. Crohn’s disease follows a relapsing and remitting course, causing significant discomfort and affecting digestion and nutrient absorption. In Ayurveda, conditions similar to Crohn’s disease are described under “Grahani Roga” or “Atisara” depending on the presentation, with Agni Mandya (weak digestion) being the root cause.
Cause of Crohn's Disease
The exact cause of Crohn’s disease is unknown, but it is considered to be multifactorial, involving an abnormal immune response attacking the GI tract, Familial predisposition, Environmental Triggers like Diet, infections and smoking. Causes mentioned in Ayurveda are Irregular eating habits, Excessive intake of spicy and sour foods , Daytime sleeping, Emotional stress and anger, Improper suppression of natural urges.

Crohn's Disease and Ayurveda Perspective :
Chrons are linked to Grahani disease, according to Ayurveda. The small intestines, more especially the jejunum and ileum, are referred to anatomically as grahani. Anywhere in the digestive tract, inflammation in this area brought on by an excess of Vata, Pitta, or Kapha Doshas can result in a variety of symptoms, including Crohn's disease. Depending on the involvement of pathological elements and prevalence, symptoms vary in intensity and form. The main causes of this Grahani disease are irregular, inappropriate, or incompatible dietary habits, increased junk food, and mandagi, which suggests poor appetite and digestion. One of the primary causes of a few digestive disorders, such as post-diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome, is pathya.
